Post History

Post 2578 was established in 1948 and is named after PFC Dennis F. Thomas who was a Barnstable resident.  He received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with Company A, 1st Marine Raider Battalion in action against enemy Japanese forces near the Matanikau River on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on October 8-9, 1942.  When his battalion moved into a defensive position, PFC Thomas and other members of his platoon bore the heavy brunt of the attack.  Approximately 150 Japanese fiercely attacked the small group of Marines with bayonets, grenades and automatic firing weapons.  He fought valiantly and desperately in hand-to-hand combat against overwhelmingly hostile forces, refusing to be displaced from his position and would heroically die at his post.

For many years the post was located at 455 Iyannough Road, Hyannis. The post building was sold in 2013 and meeting activity was moved to the Barnstable Municipal Airport.
